The ABR is an independent, not-for-profit organization and is one of 24 national medical specialty boards that make up the American Board of Medical Specialties (ABMS). We were founded in 1934 to protect the public by assessing and certifying doctors who meet specific educational, training, and professional requirements.
Our mission is to certify that our diplomates demonstrate the requisite knowledge, skill, and understanding of their disciplines to the benefit of patients.
Board certification serves as an important marker for the highest standard of care. It reflects the critical core values of compassion, patient-centeredness, and a passion for education. Patients, physicians, healthcare providers, insurers, and quality organizations look for board certification as the best measure of a physician’s knowledge, experience, and skills to provide quality care within a given specialty.
