Celebrate National Donut Day With The Salvation Army Tucson

Ten percent of Bashas’ Donut Day sales donated to The Salvation Army

TUCSON, Ariz. (June 3, 2024) On Friday, June 7, 2024, The Salvation Army will celebrate National Donut Day and the caring support of Bashas’.

Bashas’, as it has for many years, will generously donate to the Army 10 percent of all National Donut Day sales of its popular donuts (including the winners of its annual Donut Flavor Craze contest) at Bashas’ stores across Arizona.

“National Donut Day serves as a reminder of the brave work The Salvation Army does every day for the good of our neighbors in need,” said Tucson City Coordinator Christopher Kim. “We wish to thank Bashas’ for its long-time support and sharing that compassion for the Tucson community.”

“The Salvation Army continues to support the needs of some of our communities’ most vulnerable individuals with compassion and a people-oriented approach,” said Ashley Shick, Director of Communications and Public Affairs. “Bashas’ is proud to help while celebrating our most beloved bakery item, our scratch-made donuts.”

The first National Donut Day was celebrated in 1938 to honor The Salvation Army’s “Donut Lassies,” who made history when they risked their lives to raise spirits and fuel hope by serving thousands of soldiers during WWI, in part by providing donuts, coffee and other sweet confections.

In 1917, Salvation Army volunteers traveled to France and set up makeshift huts on the front lines, where they offered essential goods and sweet treats to boost morale. The donut was then, and continues to be, a taste of home and a symbol of comfort for Americans.

More than a hundred years later, The Salvation Army still brings aid to those in need, now through a wide range of social services for America’s most vulnerable individuals and families. In Tucson, The Salvation Army helped 22,293 people last year, 118,420 meals were served, 86,455 nights of shelter were provided, 20,342 pieces of clothing were distributed, and 4,490 people were given relief from extreme weather.
